Today was the 36th day of measurable snowfall in the Chicago area. Four more inches over night.

Happy Leap Day
All hell broke loose at work this morning. Related? Who knows? It felt like Y2K all over again...

Energy
Three weeks w/o caffeine and (other than less selection in beverages) I don't really notice. I do miss the high, though.

Baby sharing
No, not sharing babies like sharing a toy or an object; more like sharing experiences, stories, feelings, fears and realizations. Today, we spent the afternoon with another couple who had a baby only two weeks after we did. Since Amanda is only 11 weeks old, we are pretty much on the same path of development (though lots can happen in two weeks).
I found it refreshing that they have had similar experiences, frustrations and joys of parenting as have had. Tim receives the same greeting upon coming home from work from his Angela as I receive from my Amanda - tears not of joy, but frustration. With the hustle and bustle of the work day, all a father wants is some peace and quiet upon arriving home. That's not in our daughters' game plan so it seems.
I do have to say that our Amanda is getting much better these days. Her fits of crying (for no apparent reason) has decreased and she sleeps longer at night.
Our visit to Natalie and Tim also included a tour of their new home. It was our first visit; it's a very nice house. Katie and I are jealous of a few facets: square-footage, closet space, elbow room, finished basement, storage, his/hers sinks and laundry room. I could elaborate, but I don't feel it's necessary. We had a great time today; thank you for your hospitality.

Damn Cubs
I'm sitting in one of the stupid electronic waiting rooms trying to buy tickets for two traditions - Trifecta and Derk's birthday. The former is a golf-baseball-pub crawl and the latter is a birthday game for a good ex-coworker/buddy. He attends one game a year and drinks alcohol ony one day each year. They collide at his birthday game at Wrigley Field each July.

Daycare
The big topic at hand is that Katie's maternity leave (as long as it is) will run out in a few weeks. Then what do we do with our little angel? While Katie ponders part-time vs. full-time, we still need somewhere for her to go regardless. Family members have been less than receptive to the notion, so we are turning outside the family for help.
Most daycare places around us don't take infants. Hinsdale has a great day-car/education place that does take infants. In fact, they can take 12 of them at any given time. Why 12? Because that's how many cribs they have and also that allows them to maintain a four-infants-to-one-teacher ratio. No more, no less.
We toured it last night. I have to say that I liked it. They answered all of our questions and made me feel at ease. Katie needs some time to mull it over. One of the best perks is that we can drop Amanda off in the morning, park our car there and walk a few blocks to the Hinsdale train station to jump on the same train line we would catch from home. Bonus. The path would reverse on the way home.

All night, all night long
Amanda slept through the night for the first time last night. From 10:30pm to 7:00am she was asleep. How is it that in only a few weeks she can (in one night) go from needing to eat every 90 minutes to not needing to eat for over 8 hours? The human body is amazing...

Risky behavior revisited
So far, so good. Everyone is healthy at home and I'm feeling much better after a few days at home on the couch getting caught up on Heroes. Damn the writers strike. Because of that, Heroes won't return until the fall. All this cramming I've been doing and I now have all summer to sit on it. What a joke.

Risky behavior
Working from home sick with coughs, aches, sneezing while Katie goes to court to testify against drunk driver. I'll be Daddy Daycare today. I can't see anything wrong with this picture; can you?

Chicago auto show
At the Chicago Auto Show on St. Valentine's Day; has to be the greatest idea. The place is free of congestion and there's no line to get into the Jeep road course. Nice!

Health
I feel pretty crappy today; feel something coming on. I have a cough (which produces no phlem), light sensitvity and some aches. Could be ugly. I'll power through it. I hope to avoid making any of my coworkers ill. On the bright side, I'm caffeine-free for 6 days and still alive.

The mantel
This is how my entertainment center looks after all the woe of going to the Container Store. I still need to clean up some of the wires, but you get the idea.

Is that white noise or a crying baby?
I can't tell the difference these days. Trains, fans, static all cause it. I've conferred with other fathers on this topic and they concur. When will it stop?

Lent
Today is Ash Wednesday; a day all good Catholics get ashes, fast (no snacking and only one large meal), abstain from eating meat and give something up for 40 days. This year, I've decided to give up caffeine. Yeah I know it's suicide, but I'm trying to see how it will affect me. Stay tuned; so far, I'm already starting to doze off after lunch.

The sling
This sling thing has got to be the best thing for a father. Put your baby in this over-the-shoulder-baby-holder and walk around without any worries. She actually sleeps in it; quite amazing. I walk up and down stairs and all over the house.

Try to "contain yourself"
Oh how I love to hate the Container Store. Why? Well, it's very complicated really and has a lot to do with my own lack of planning, short temper and I hate waiting just to be waited-on.
Today is the last day of the "annual elfa sale". Everything is 30% off. That's a big deal because their crap is already 50% more expensive than anything you could find at Home Depot or Menards or Ace. That means the place was going to be jammed with last-minute shoppers (even though it was Super Bowl weekend). Women love this store. Somehow, it's more approachable than a hardware store. I digress. Let me tell you why I hate it.
1)The stores are not designed well
2)They have tiny shopping carts
3)You can't grab all the items by yourself; someone must "design" a solution for you

Two months old
Our daughter is two months old yesterday. What a great deal of changes in only 8 weeks time. She used to only make one noise - DEFCON 1. Now, she's more subtle in her alerting. You can tell that she is hungry, tired or has a soiled diaper. Leaps and bounds better. She slept six hours straight the ohter night.
That's huge; epecially since Katie told me yesterday that she thought she was coming down with the flu. She was tired and had an upset stomach. I said, "You cannot get ill... Don't let it happen."

Worth his weight in gold
And at over $900 per ounce, that comes to $4,248,000. Okay, so maybe not that much. Let me tell you why he is worth somewhere between that figure and $500.
In November, I figured it might be worth my time to investigate purchasing a snow blower. Since we were on track to go HD, I would have to settle for a used model. Cue Brian's keen eye.
Weeks later, he alerted me that one of his coworkers (Mark) has a neighbor who is looking to seel an old Ariens 5 HP two-stage snow thrower. That's right up my alley. The cost - $150. That unit would cost about $700 new, so I figured I would have a look at it. It took some starter fluid and fresh gas, but she started and ran and I bought it.
Brian once again helped me out by tearing apart and replacing the fuel line, primer line, oil and spart plug. A simple fix, but it's nice to have help. Ever since that work, she has ran like a champ. She has electric start, so there is no need to even prime anymore...
So, why all this talk about worth his weight in gold? Well, it's been the snowiest Chicago winter in 25 years and we've gotten over 14" of snow in the past few days. Without Brian, I'd be shoveling every hour just to stay ahead. I did that for the first few snowfalls this year before I realized a power tool was the way to go.
His value:
Snow blower - $550
Flooring labor - $2,000
Motorcycle tourgide - $4,000
Other help - $?,????
Advice - $?,???
